Price's Lost Campaign by Mark A. Lause5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In contrast, Carwardine’s “Lincoln’s Horizons: The Nationalist as Universalist” sets the right tone for the Great Emancipator by reminding readers that despite his lack of travel abroad, the perpetually curious Lincoln had two globes-celestial and planetary-in his Springfield, Ill., home. In fact, one of the book’s key features is found in the appendix by George Scratcherd on “Foreign Language Biographies of Lincoln,” which clearly shows that biographies in Chinese, Japanese and Korean have come to dominate the field. The Global Lincoln has both a Western European and biographical orientation, as might be expected from Carwardine, a Lincoln biographer himself. The Global Lincoln, edited by Jay Sexton and Richard Carwardine, president of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, is the latest volume in international Lincoln studies and emerged from a 2009 conference held at the prestigious British university. Have Americans outsourced one of their greatest political treasures? It will surprise many Americans that the Great Emancipator is the best-known American president around the world and that this research began abroad. Placebo book5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Dispenza runs workshops devoted to this topic and there is just the flavour of some ‘conflict of interest’ in some of his writings about the process, in which the workshops were on the verge of being hyped. ![]() Perhaps not surprisingly to those of you who know me, I have some quibbles with the book. The book is a well-researched and thoughtful discussion of what we know to date about the placebo effect – with particular reference to the possible ways in which placebos might affect health – including hormonal, neurological, epigenetic and quantum effects. He also has the remarkable story of having healed himself from trauma to his spinal cord that should have prevented him from ever walking again. ![]() He has written a couple of books before – Evolve Your Brain: The Science of Changing Your Mind (2008) and Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One (2013), and was featured in What the BLEEP Do We Know? – a 2004 movie exploring the edges of quantum physics and consciousness which sometimes, in my opinion, wanders over those edges. Joe Dispenza is a chiropractor in Olympia Washington. You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. ~ C. We cannot change anything until we accept it. The ruin of kings series5/20/2023 ![]() Finally, there are regular footnotes made by a magician who’s making a case for Kihrin’s acquittal to the emperor. She starts the story earlier, and the two alternate and fight over details throughout the book. ![]() Kihrin tells the story from where he thinks it begins, but is regularly interrupted by his jailer, a shapeshifter who can read minds and retains the memories of her many victims. The storytelling of this novel is very unique there are effectively three storytellers. Will he take hold of his destiny, or is he merely a pawn in the machinations of those far stronger than him? Even his newfound allies seem convinced he’s supposed to be the one to bring everything crashing down, and Kihrin feels helplessly caught in the middle. Kihrin isn’t really keen on the idea, but his enemies don’t seem to believe him. Kihrin, a thief raised in a whorehouse, is suddenly caught up in the plans of some very powerful people after he’s deemed the Chosen One, the boy meant to destroy everything he knows and loves. Signed, Mata Hari by Yannick Murphy5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() S igned, Mata Hari has a dreamlike quality as it moves back and forth in time from Margaretha's childhood in the Netherlands, where her father deserted the family, her mother died, and she was raised by nuns - to her abusive marriage to Dutch naval captain Rudolph MacLeod on leave from his post in Java the poisoning of her children - and death of her beloved son Norman in Indonesia her husband's and her own affairs there their return to Europe, where MacLeod took her daughter away from her how Margaretha worked to support herself as an artist's model and then an exotic dancer (using what she had seen of temple dancers in Java) and her relationships with many wealthy lovers across Europe (which led to suspicion that she acted as a spy for the Germans).Īccording to Wikipedia, the historical record leaves doubt that Mata Hari really was a German spy. She tells folktales from her time in Indonesia to her interrogator, and writes letters to the daughter, Non, from whom she has long been separated. ![]() Now Yannnick Murphy brings us a historical novel in which Margaretha Zelle reminisces about her life - and how her reputation grew - from her prison cell in 1917 Paris. Who hasn't heard of the infamous World War I spy/femme fatale, Mata Hari? But how much else do we know about her? Very little, on my part. ![]() |
